How Should I Handle a Hit-And-Run?

On Behalf of Gierth-Eddy Law Offices, PLLC Sept. 2, 2020

Hit-and-run accidents are some of the most frustrating if you are the victim. Getting into any kind of car accident is very stressful, but seeing the culprit speed away from the accident can be devastating, particularly if the accident was a serious one.

Understanding how to handle hit-and-run accidents is extremely important. The best thing to do is stay put after a hit-and-run accident, according to State Farm Insurance.

Should I Let the Culprit Get Away?

The answer is yes. This is mainly because if you drive off after the perpetrator, it is highly likely this will confuse any witnesses to the accident. If two cars get into a collision and both of them drive off, no witness is going to be able to identify who was at fault in the accident.

You should, of course, move your vehicle out of the flow of traffic if that is where you are. However, if the other driver is driving away, let them do so.

What Should I Do?

If there are any injuries, you need to call 911. If nobody sustained injury, then you can call the police non-emergency number to get a police report. You should also try and get statements from eyewitnesses.

It is possible that one of those eyewitnesses was able to get a photo or video recording of the culprit as he or she was driving away from the scene of the accident. It is even better if a witness was able to get the license plate number of the culprit’s vehicle. If this is the case, you will be able to locate the culprit very easily.
